The Expediting Co., Inc attended and was a sponsor the annual Air Cargo Conference in Orlando, FL. This is the 17th year in a row we have participated. Below is the press release recapping the conference:

AirCargo 2008 Attracts Top Industry Professionals for Education, Networking

Kansas City, Mo. (April 4, 2008) -- The 6th annual Air Cargo 2008 conference, held March 16-18 at the Omni ChampionsGate in Orlando, Florida, drew nearly 800 top-tier attendees, exhibitors and sponsors. This event, co-sponsored by the Express Delivery and Logistics Association (XLA), Air and Expedited Motor Carriers Association (AEMCA), and the Airforwarders Association (AfA), is the premier conference for the expedited transportation, forwarding and cargo industries.

The "Global Challenges: It's Not Just Boxes" program began Sunday, March 16, with the opening of the hall of 85 exhibitors. Educational events opened on Monday, March 17. Frank Newman, representing Diamond Sponsor FedEx Express, introduced Keynote Speaker Peter McDonald, chief operating officer of United Airlines. Speaking on the topic of United's extensive restructuring that resulted in the company's return to profitability, McDonald shared some tips for surviving during these difficult times of changing technology, high fuel prices and increasing competition.

"The air transport business faces tremendous pressure and evolves on a daily basis," said McDonald. The key to achieving and maintaining global competitiveness is to recognize the role of the cargo industry in the greater picture and how it interacts with the world's other industries, he said. McDonald noted that United's turnaround relied on not taking anything for granted, and dedicating all resources to improvement. "The difficulty is in how to take the challenges and make value for the customer," he said. "You have to sell an experience. Involve the customer in the total service process."

The afternoon session featured Thomas Friedman, air cargo chief inspector with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Edward Kelley, TSA general manager of cargo, who shared information about continually evolving updates to the known shipper program and the certified cargo screening program (CCSP).

CCSP is in response to Congress' mandate that 100 percent of cargo being transported on passenger flights be screened at the same level as passenger baggage. CCSP is a voluntary facility-based program that will require stringent chain of custody be maintained throughout the supply chain. The TSA expects the program will decrease logjams, allow the ability to build bulk configurations and allow the ability to ship without potentially invasive screening later in the chain. The TSA plans to roll out additional information about the program soon.

On Tuesday, March 18, another panel of experts discussed the "green" transport issue. Brad Brandenburg of Craters and Freighters, Shan Hoel of TransGroup and Matthew Payne with the Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay program shared information about their experiences with the green movement as it pertains to the cargo industry.

Five concurrent roundtable discussions allowed attendees to have interactive exchanges on topics such as safety, transportation industry security standards, key performance indicators, marketing and recruiting.

The final session was an independent contractor issues forum featuring a company owner, an attorney and an IC specialist. All three panelists agreed that the IC-model is under attack in the United States, and that there is not an industry-wide effort to coordinate political action on the topic.

Plans are already underway for the 7th annual conference on March 8-10, 2009, at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. For more information, contact Kristy McKibben, XLA, kristy@robstan.com or call 816-221-0254, or visit www.aircargoconference.com.
